Product description
Mosa Meat’s flagship product is its cultured beef burger, created by growing muscle and fat cells from a small biopsy of cows in bioreactors. The cells multiply, differentiate, and mature into actual beef tissue without the need for animal slaughter. This innovative process not only provides a sustainable and cruelty-free alternative to traditional meat production but also significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with beef consumption.
Since producing the world’s first cultured hamburger in 2013, Mosa Meat has made substantial advancements in their technology. They have managed to reduce cell culture costs over 80-fold and eliminated all animal-derived serum from their process by 2019. The resulting product offers the same taste, texture, and nutritional value as traditional beef but with a dramatically lower environmental footprint.
In fact, cultured beef burgers from Mosa Meat have been shown to produce up to 92% less greenhouse gas emissions, require 95% less land use, and consume 78% less water compared to conventional beef production methods. This significant reduction in resource usage makes cultured beef a more sustainable and eco-friendly option for consumers.
In July 2024, Mosa Meat conducted the first public tasting of their cultured beef in the EU, showcasing the potential of this innovative protein source. Regulatory applications for market sale have been submitted in the UK and EU, with plans to initially use cultivated fat as a blended ingredient. Mosa Meat is also scaling up its production efforts by expanding its Maastricht facility to accommodate industrial-scale bioreactors for future volume.
By offering a product that meets both consumer expectations and chef standards, the Cultured Beef Burger by Mosa Meat represents a significant milestone in sustainable protein production. It combines culinary excellence with ethical considerations and environmental stewardship, paving the way for a more sustainable food future.
