Product description

Palm Strand Board (PSB®) by Desert Board is an innovative engineered wooden board made from locally regenerated biomass in the UAE. Unlike traditional wood-based construction materials, PSB® is manufactured from date-palm fronds, a sustainable and abundant resource. The patented manufacturing process ensures zero formaldehyde emissions, making it an eco-friendly alternative to conventional oriented strand board (OSB). PSB® acts as an artificial carbon sink, locking in carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. This sustainable material offers various benefits such as moisture resistance, termite resistance, and structural performance comparable to traditional OSB.

PSB® is designed with circular economy principles in mind, allowing for reuse, recycling, and regeneration. By converting palm frond waste into a high-value building material, PSB® supports waste-to-resource initiatives and reduces the environmental impact of construction activities. Its applications range from interior fit-outs to structural formwork, modular construction, doors, and joinery, providing a versatile and sustainable solution for the construction industry.

Key characteristics and environmental benefits

Key Characteristics

  • Made from 100% date-palm fronds, a renewable agricultural by-product

  • Zero formaldehyde emissions — healthier for indoor air quality

  • Comparable strength and durability to OSB 3/4 and MDF boards

  • Moisture- and termite-resistant, suitable for both interior and construction use

  • Fire-rated options available for doors and structural panels

  • Reusable and recyclable at the end of life, designed for circularity

  • Locally manufactured in the UAE to reduce import dependency and carbon footprint

  • Precision-engineered for consistent thickness, stability, and machinability

  • Certified under ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 quality and environmental standards

  • Suitable for furniture, partitions, flooring, formwork, and modular construction

Environmental Benefits

  • Transforms agricultural waste (palm fronds) into high-value building material

  • Prevents deforestation by replacing timber-based boards

  • Avoids methane emissions from burning or landfilling palm waste

  • Acts as a carbon sink, locking CO₂ within the product structure

  • Non-toxic and low-VOC, improving indoor environmental quality

  • Supports UAE Net Zero 2050 and circular economy goals

  • Reduces embodied carbon in construction materials supply chains

  • Promotes local circular manufacturing and green job creation

  • Minimizes resource extraction by valorizing existing biomass streams

  • Demonstrates a scalable model for sustainable materials in arid regions

About the Company

Desert Board is a UAE-based manufacturer that has pioneered a sustainable approach to engineered wood‐board materials. Their core technology transforms annually regenerated date-palm fronds—once a waste stream—into high-performance Palm Strand Board (PSB®), offering a zero-formaldehyde, deforestation‐free, circular economy solution. The company’s factory in the Abu Dhabi Khalifa Economic Zone was designed to divert palm biomass from landfill or incineration, thereby reducing methane and CO₂ emissions. With certifications across ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and backing by the Forest Stewardship Council, Desert Board actively aligns with global sustainability goals and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy. By offering a structural material made from what was previously agricultural waste, they not only reduce environmental impact but also enable healthier indoor environments, reuse-friendly lifecycle, and local manufacturing that supports industrial diversification. Their vision is to establish the palm-frond derived PSB® as a global benchmark for sustainable building materials.
