CHARM Bot is an apparatus in coral aquaculture and reef restoration that automates labour-intensive tasks such as cleaning, monitoring, and maintaining health of coral reef animals. This customizable apparatus includes two high-definition autofocus cameras, four nozzles for liquid, food, and air exchange, quantum light sensors, and a versatile auxiliary motor. The tool can switch between a soft bristle brush for tank cleaning, a swivel cam for remote viewing, and a soft-robotic gripper for pickand-place manoeuvres.
CHARM is suitable for small, large, off-grid and remote aquaculture operations. The CHARM robot integrates commercially-available components with M5 V-slot anodized aluminium extrusions and 3D printed mounts. It can mount onto existing aquaculture tables or be suspended from the ceiling. The footprint size is customizable to meet diverse needs, making it helpful for coral farming and other indoor or outdoor farming operations. Users can manage livestock remotely, ensure continuous tank cleaning, and provide quality assurance for scientific studies. Trials demonstrate that CHARM reduces labour effort of cleaning by 97% and securely provides remote control capabilities.
By design, CHARM's controlled nurseries protect coral fragments from predators and environmental stressors until (one day) they are mature enough for transplantation onto damaged reefs.
